We are thrilled to announce our official entry into the IBM Watson AI XPRIZE, a global competition challenging teams to develop powerful Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based applications and demonstrate how humans can collaborate with AIs to tackle the world’s greatest challenges. The AI-based application that we at Wadhwani AI are developing is a smartphone-based anthropometry tool that will help health workers screen low birth weight newborns without any specialised equipment or physical examinations.
Wadhwani AI is the first and only official competitor from India and Asia, and the only team from the developing world among the 34 official competitors from around the world that are vying for the $5M prize purse.
Dr. Rahul Panicker, Chief Innovation Officer, Wadhwani AI, shares that, “The first month of life has a disproportionate impact on the lifelong health of a baby. UNICEF estimates that nearly half the world’s 20 million low-birth-weight babies are not weighed at birth. In the absence of proper care, we’re losing too many of these babies. We are building an AI-powered virtual weighing machine that will allow health workers to estimate a newborn’s weight, head circumference, and length using only a short video taken on a generic smartphone, without network connectivity or additional hardware.”
Dr. P. Anandan, CEO, Wadhwani AI, stated, “Our smartphone-based anthropometry solution uses cutting-edge techniques in AI and computer vision. What excites us the most is that this solution will help the most vulnerable members of our society – newborn babies – get the medical care they deserve and need.”
